The winner of a US Navy competition launched in 1957 for a turbine-powered utility helicopter the HU2K-1, as it was originally designated, was the first Kaman helicopter to break from the company’s traditional intermeshing rotor configuration. A significant feature of the design was its servo flap main rotor blade control system, which eliminated the need for blade pitch change and associated hinges. The prototype flew for the first time on July 2nd 1959 and service entry, with the revised Tri-Service designation of UH-2, occurred on December 18th 1962. Production ended following the completion of 184 examples. Service experience showed it to be underpowered leading to forty-one airframes being re-manufactured from the original single-engine to a more powerful twin-engine configuration.
