The way to a mind and body overhaul may just be found if you clear out the clutter, says a great new book

The Ultimate Spring Detox

A decluttered room equals a decluttered mind, but many of us find it difficult to get rid of belongings. But clearing out clutter isn’t about throwing everything away, it’s about losing what’s useless and making space for things that aren’t. Our surroundings have a huge impact on our wellbeing, so if you want to live in peace and harmony, spring could be the time to have a clear out. It’s the season of new beginnings, so it makes timely sense for a refresh.

We are a reflection of our environment, so a happy living space is likely to enhance your health and state of mind, opening you up to new opportunities. ‘The clutter people have in their home doesn’t just make a blockage physically but mentally also,’ says Vicky Silverthorn, professional organiser and author of Start With Your Sock Drawer. ‘Clutter is like a physical to-do list. Always reminding you you have to deal with something. It can hinder your productivity, drag your energy levels down and cause anxiety and stress levels to rise.’ Here we share our expert advice to discard the clutter and appreciate your living space.

Make space

Simon’s 3 tips to tackle clutter

1. Be realistic

Get rid of broken appliances, computers or sporting equipment. If you haven’t fixed them by now, you never will.

2. Think sensibly

Always declutter before buying storage, otherwise you’re shooting in the dark. If you don’t know how much you own, how can you buy the right solution for your needs?

3. Be tidy

To get over that mental block that prevents you from organising your life, tidy up first thing in the morning. Once the chore is done, you’re free to do what you want for the rest of the day.
