CONTRARY TO THE PRESSURES TO PICK ONE HOBBY AND MASTER IT, HERE’S WHY JUMPING BETWEEN SEVERAL DIFFERENT CRAFTS COULD BE A MUCH-NEEDED FORM OF SELF-CARE
SADIA NOWSHIN
JACK OF ALL TRADES, HAPPY

Every creative has their favourite hobby – you might experiment with a few different disciplines, but the expectation is that you eventually settle on one. After all, making a creative passion into a liveable income means you have to be good at your craft, so it makes sense to choose one thing and perfect it. However, while that mentality could help your passions become professional endeavours, ignoring it entirely could potentially be better for your mental wellbeing – and that’s where multi-crafting comes in.

Multi-crafting refers to the practice of dipping your brush (or hook, or whichever artistic implement is appropriate) into several different crafts, rather than channelling all of your energy into one. You can jump from knitting a scarf to painting a landscape to making clay jewellery, all in the same week. While multi-crafting may go against every perfectionist instinct you have, there’s real benefits to shelving hesitation and embracing spontaneity.
