Happy to be back here at Asian Photography sharing my experience of 15 years of shooting fashion and advertisement photography. For those of you who may have been following my regular photography column in Asian Photography in the past I hope you have been able to successfully apply some of my direction and suggestions to your own career. For these who are not familiar with my work I am always happy to hear from you on my various social media platforms.
In the past year I have had the pleasure to interact with many young and upcoming photographers, in particular in my lectures at Conde Nast fashion school, and a very common question I am asked is what does it take to be a successful fashion photographer. Of course, there are a number of books written on the subject, and in fact, it does take a book’s length of detail and information to grasp the complete picture of the genre of fashion photography and what a career in the field might entail. Here we will start off with an introductory discussion on fashion photography, welcome to Fashion Photography 101.
Let’s start from the beginning to assume you already have a foundation in the more technical aspects of photography. You know clearly the definitions of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how they combine to get the exposure you are after. You are familiar with different formats of cameras, focal lengths of lenses and when in discussion we are talking about main lights, fill lights and accent lights you are not at a complete loss. However, you have limited experience with fashion photography and you want to explore how to develop a career in shooting fashion.
