Honouring Bill CunningHam.
There are moments in time when one person comes and changes the way the rest of the world thinks and looks at the things. Great men like these have seldom carved the path for thousands of others and have quietly left us. Bill Cunningham is one such man. Cunningham aged 87 died in New York City on June 25, 2016 throwing the entire photography community in a shock. We thought it would be wise to educate our readers who have just started photography about this great man and his contribution to the photography industry.
William John Cunningham Jr, known by everyone as Bill Cunningham was an American fashion photographer for The New York Times and was famous for covering street fashion extensively throughout his long career. Bill dropped out in 1948 and moved to New York City when he was only 19 years old. He worked at several places like hat shops, couture salons etc where he slowly gathered his knowledge about fashion. He then started writing for Women’s Wear Daily and then for the Chicago Tribune. While working there he started taking candid photographs of street fashion. Completely self taught, he developed a liking for the art. In December 1978, Bill published a few photographs in The New York Times, which over time became the regular series On the Street.
