When Sumanth, Sashank, Vidya Ranya and their uncle Uma Maheswar Rao set out on a ten-day tour to Cambodia and Vietnam, it was more like an adventure to discover its lost treasures.
Cultural tour at Cambodia
“At an airfare that’s actually cheaper than a ticket to Delhi, we set out on our trip in October 2017. Our first stop was Siem Reap in Cambodia, which is the closest town to the ancient city of Angkor.
Angkor, a city that was lost in time, was brought to light by a French man in the late 1800’s. Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, we were to cross the gate that leads to the ancient city. There was a bridge with figures of demons on one side and with deities on the other, both tugging on the body of Naga, the serpent. It resembles the churning of the ocean for the milk of immortality. The ancient Khmer empire was predominantly Hindu, but today no traces of Hinduism can be seen as it is replaced with Buddhism.
Our next stop was the world renowned Bayon temple, famous for its most distinctive feature of stone faces which resemble Jayavarman VII, the king who built it. From here we headed to see the Ta Prohm temple which is undergoing conservation by the Indian government and is famous for being the backdrop for the Hollywood movie Tomb Raider.
After filling upon a tasty Cambodian lunch, we headed straight to the star attraction of our journey, the Angkor Wat Temple. Angkor Wat is a Vishnu Temple that faces west. Surrounded by a man-made moat, the world’s largest temple complex is reminiscent of the scale and grandeur of the cosmos that it intends to represent. Climbing up the steep steps and breathing in the sheer grandeur of this precinct was worth the hype.
