Indian cricket witnessed many highs and lows in the decade (2010-2019) which is coming to an end. From the World Cup triumph at home in 2011 to the painful exit in the 2019 semis, and the historic Test series win Down Under to the disappointing Test series loss at home to England in 2012, Indian cricket has seen it all. In this feature, we focus on the positives, and look back at ten memorable moments of Indian cricket in the decade.
WORLD CUP COMES ‘HOME’ AFTER 28 YEARS
When MS Dhoni lofted Nuwan Kulasekara into the stand at Wankhede, it ended a 28-year-old drought for India. After Kapil’s Devils, India finally had a new bunch of players they could call World Champions. Gautam Gambhir (97), and skipper Dhoni (91 not out) were the key contributors in India’s glorious win. With the triumph, India became the first home team to lift the World Cup, a tradition continued by Australia and England in the subsequent editions.
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY
When Dhoni won the Champions Trophy in 2013, he created history by becoming the first international captain to lift all three ICC trophies. He had already captured the World T20 in 2007, and the World Cup in 2011. India defeated hosts England by five runs in a low-scoring encounter. Ravindra Jadeja was man of the final (33 not out from 25 balls, and 2 for 24). The tournament saw the emergence of Shikhar Dhawan, who was player of series for his 363 runs.
