The Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise have made a massive move ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, replacing Rohit Sharma as captain with all-rounder Hardik Pandya. The latter was traded from Gujarat Titans (GT) during the trade window. And while the move seemed a step in the direction of choosing the next captain, the decision to appoint him as leader directly for the upcoming IPL season has come as a shock to some. According to MI’s official statement, the move “is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready."
Pandya’s elevation brings an end to the Rohit Sharma era in Mumbai Indians. The Hitman took charge of the side in 2013 and went on to lead them to victory in the T20 league a record five times (equal with Chennai Super Kings). As Mumbai Indians captain, Rohit led the side 158 times, winning 87 matches and losing 67. Four games ended in a tie. As a batter, the right-hander is the leading run-getter for the Mumbai franchise. In 207 games, he has amassed 5314 runs at an average of 29.52 and a strike rate of 129.76 with one hundred and 35 fifties.
