Local jewellery designer Gisèle Human of WAIF chats to us about how she started out, her latest collection and what the future holds for her brand
Growing up in her mother’s goldsmith studio, Gisèle Human never really pictured herself as a jewellery designer. For two years she was a junior copywriter at an agency in Cape Town, where powerful and creative women taking control of their projects and aesthetics surrounded her.
‘As a copywriter, I didn’t have much input on how things looked, so I guess the lack of that contributed to my wanting to create something of my own,’ says Gisèle. ‘I learned so much from that industry in terms of branding, marketing, having a single-minded aesthetic and the importance of a high-quality shoot. There was also a strong culture of “anything can be done” in the advertising industry.’
