Protecting pangolins is as easy as using WhatsApp

Pangolert is a simple yet powerful tool that farmers and others can use to report pangolin sightings, alert authorities about poaching, and contribute to protecting this threatened animal.

Africa’s farmers are at the frontline of animal conservation, carefully watching changes in the environment and the subsequent impact on animal behaviour. This deep connection to ecosystems is one that is needed now more than ever to protect the pangolin.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species lists pangolins as threatened with extinction. They are the world’s most trafficked mammals, with poachers relentlessly hunting them for their scales and meat. However, threats to pangolins extend beyond poaching and include risks like road traffic injuries.

“Farmers are custodians of Africa’s ecosystems, and they encounter important information on a daily basis that can help us save pangolins,” says Toby Jermyn, founder of South African-based NPO Pangolin.Africa.

“We call on them to report pangolin sightings using our Pangolert service so that we can collectively safeguard the future for these creatures.”
