The resort town of Niseko, located on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan, isn't just recognised for its world-class skiing and snowboarding. Visitors can also tick off beautiful scenery, hot springs and a jaw-dropping view of the incredible snow-capped volcano Mount Yotei.
More than anywhere else in the country, the area is subject to high falls of "champagne powder" snow - exceptionally light and dry. And Hanazono Niseko ski resort is particularly famous for its elongated ski season (December to April) and its backcountry zone for advanced skiers.
The area is awash with top-notch international hotels, all just a few metres walk from ski lifts and gondolas. You'll also find a vibrant dining and nightlife scene with countless restaurants, bars and izakayas (Japanese-style pubs), all serving local cuisine and international dishes.
In recent years, Niseko has become a magnet for international snow bunnies, and having visited for a week during the ski season, we can really see why...
VIP LUXURY VERSUS HOME COMFORTS
For those whose main focus is the worldclass ski runs, Niseko Village is the place to be. And if you're looking for awardwinning accommodation with familiar home comforts and authentic Japanese touches, stay at the Hilton Niseko Village. We spent a week at the rustic 500+ room hotel named Japan's best ski hotel four times and we couldn't fault a single aspect.
The resort includes access for all guests to a lip-smacking hot and cold buffet breakfast at Melt restaurant. It also offers relaxation facilities, such as a gym, onsen (or hotspring) and spa - as well as therapists providing delightful treatments - and on-site ski shops. We spent cosy evenings playing cards and sipping Hokkaido gin in The Flame bar.
