THERE SHE GOES

The exhausting reality but infinite rewards of life with a disabled child have been brought sharply into focus by acclaimed comedy drama There She Goes, which first hit our screens in 2018.

And now, the Yates family are back in a one-off BBC2 special, in which parents Emily and Simon (Jessica Hynes and David Tennant) are dealing with fresh challenges as their exuberant, unpredictable daughter Rosie (Miley Locke), who has severe learning disabilities due to a chromosomal disorder, is now 13 and hitting puberty.

Written again by Shaun Pye and Sarah Crawford, who base the show on their own experiences of raising their daughter Joey, the episode sees Emily and Simon along with son Ben (Edan Hayhurst) trying to cope with changes in Rosie’s behaviour, while they learn more about her disorder.

Here, Jessica, 50, who won a BAFTA for her role in 2019, and David, 52, tell us more…

What is in store for the Yateses this time?

JESSICA There are big changes as Ben and Rosie are growing up, and Simon and Emily are coming to terms with what that might mean for them all. There are also flashbacks to when Emily and Simon considered having a third child, and how the pros and cons were not what they expected and how making the decision together brought them closer.

There is also news about Rosie’s condition, isn’t there?

DAVID They get some long-awaited information, but getting answers doesn’t necessarily give them the closure they imagined it might…
