IT’S all about the nostalgia in 2023. As with many other trends in fashion, beauty, books and travel, social media platform TikTok is driving food trends in ways that bring back old dishes – sometimes in new ways.
This year we’ll see many things we know and love but not always in the form we’re accustomed to. Get ready for a sit-down with your grandmother or mom and revive family favourites with some of these trends.
Or try new planet-friendly options, which are just going to become increasingly accessible over time.
1 JUST LIKE GRANDMA MADE IT
Quick and convenient will never go out of fashion but this year there’ll be a greater return to slow and steady cooking without modern meal shortcuts. Think baked goods that take hours – even days – to prepare or macaroni and cheese with authentic homemade béchamel sauce.
Recipes that have been passed down through generations will reemerge and these often don’t require any modern cooking methods. But this won’t bother home cooks who found joy in making meals at home during Covid-19 lockdowns – the sense of nostalgia, authenticity and eating “real” food will more than makeup for the time and effort required.
It won’t be totally old-school, though. Expect to see a lot more gadgets and gear that can make your kitchen resemble a professional restaurant kitchen.
2 SOME LIKE IT HOT(ISH)
Spicy food doesn’t have to scorch your palate – this year we’ll see far more nuanced heat dishes that leave a tingle on your tongue.
