PAN-AFRICAN DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
Thabisa Mjo
Owner and founder of Mash. T Design Studio, Thabisa Mjo has made it her raison d'être to ensure luxury lies in the artistry of craftsmanship. Inspired by South Africa's deep cultural heritage, her designs bridge the gap between tradition and modernity by combining age-old techniques with a contemporary vision. 'My starting point is channelling my own lived experiences,' says Thabisa. 'I was surrounded by beautiful culture and that is what translates into my design work.'
The Limpopo-born designer became the first South African to have two of her works installed as part of the Paris' Musée des Arts Décoratifs in the Louvre. She recently participated in Ventura Future at Salone del Mobile Milano, one of the most prestigious design fairs in the world. "The most rewarding part of my journey has been the recognition of my design aesthetic and storytelling. I'm also grateful for the recognition of the skills and capabilities of the incredible craftspeople I work with regularly. [...] I feel emboldened to evolve and charter a new path for my practice.'
LANDSCAPE DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
Leon Kluge
Landscape Designer of the Year, Leon Kluge has always potted around with plants. 'My dad was the curator of the Lowveld Botanical Gardens in Nelspruit and I grew up riding my bike around the beautiful gardens every day,' he says. 'I knew from early on that painting with plants would be in my future.'
