PRETTY FILLER Scabiosa
November 2023
|The Gardener
There are over 70 varieties of Scabiosa (pincushion flower) in both the annuals and perennials categories with arguably some of the best ones local to our country, and excellent pollinator attractors too.

Colourful annuals
Some of the best annuals are found with Scabiosa atropurpurea (sweet scabious) and these can be grown successfully from seed. The colours range from vintage creams to deep red and burgundy and they make a pretty display in a wild garden or in groups towards the back of flower beds.
You can buy seed online from www.adeneflowers.co.za and her range of colours are gorgeous.
What they need
• Full sun.

Golden Oregano
Origanum vulgare ‘Aureum’, as its name suggests, is golden yellow in full sun and cool weather. These bright herbs are highly fragrant, with a classic oregano taste and aroma, and are often used in the kitchen for pasta and pizza. In summer, the yellow leaves will be covered with small pink and purple flowers.
