A dedicated space to entertain and cook outdoors is essential if you want to make Alfresco dining a staple in your home. Such a space is considered just like any other room in the house with the same detail assigned when it comes to decorating.

But, there are certain rules for designing outdoor kitchens before you can play.

Make sure the floor is even and has no tripping hazards.

• Choose low-maintenance materials that will hold up to being in all types of weather and add as much of your dream kitchen into the space (plug points, sinks, storage, braais, lighting etc) as your budget allows to make the space workable.

• Place the kitchen close to your outdoor dining area for maximum use of the space.

• Position the kitchen close to your vegetable garden for quick access.
