10 THINGS TO DO IN SABAH BORNEO
Expat Living Singapore|December 2023
During her three months living in Borneo’s northern state of Sabah, EL’s MEGAN HOBSON went on a quest to discover the best things to see and do in the region. Here’s her tried-and-tested shortlist for when you find yourself exploring this special part of Malaysia!
10 THINGS TO DO IN SABAH BORNEO

#1 Join a river safari on the Kinabatangan Instead of a traditional Jeep safari, plenty of exploring in Borneo is done by boat. Weaving through the jungle, the Kinabatangan River is a huge drawcard for nature enthusiasts, adventure travellers, and families. Everyone is on the lookout to see Borneo’s own “Big Five”: proboscis monkeys, rhinoceros hornbill birds, estuarine crocodiles, pygmy elephants, and, the best known of all, the Borneo orangutans.

It’s an incredible opportunity to discover more about a variety of species that can only be found in this corner of the world. It’s also loads of fun, and since tourism here is still quite small, you won’t be fighting for a glimpse of these famous animals.

#2 Visit a rehabilitation centre Central to safeguarding Borneo’s most endangered species are a few rehabilitation centres. One is located in Labuk Bay on Sabah’s northeast coast and focuses on protecting proboscis monkeys and mangrove environments (see proboscis.cc); you might also find silvered-leaf monkeys, otters, slow lorises and hornbills here.

About an hour away by bus is Sepilok, which is home to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. This facility has been running since the 1960s – you might recognise it from the television series Meet the Orangutans. There are multiple places to view the orangutans in different stages of rehabilitation, which is explained in a welcome video. You’ll want to time your visits with their feeding schedules at 10am and 3pm.

Just around the corner is the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre for rescued ex-captive bears. Join one of the educational talks for the best information on the bears and the process of reintroducing them to the wild.
