BURNING UP THE GLOBAL STAGE, BLXCKIE HAS A THING OR TWO TO SHOW US ABOUT SUCCESS

THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE occasionally undergoes a trailblazing shift with the introduction of fresh-faced artists and sounds.

Blxckie's landing is a perfect example. As his musical presence grew in the industry, the musical landscape vibrated, captivating those who listened. Gaining recognition in 2020, Blxckie's online popularity has added to his rise, leading to him headlining local concerts and international brand deals, partnerships and tours, such as his current 'See You Soon' tour in the US. These solidify his place at the pinnacle of hip-hop royalty both locally and abroad.

When I walk into the studio full of our cover photo shoot, brimming with production crew, it's incredibly easy to spot him in the crowd with his green-dyed hair. He stands out like a sore thumb. I assume the green hair could be a result of his recent collaboration with the popular soda brand, Sprite, which uses a similar hue in its branding. However, he later informed me that green is his favorite colour. "I first dyed my hair green back in 2022 around the time I did an EP called For Love."

It becomes clear why - the hair gives his image more radiance, edge and individuality. I also see that, even with his star presence, you can tell from a distance that he is friendly and easy going, something I discover when I eventually get the chance to meet him. As we shake hands, he seems kind and interested, and it immediately becomes clicks why the general public and those around him find him endearing.

Once more, my focus is on his movements across the room and his interactions with those nearby; he displays the qualities of a modest, well-groomed, well-raised young man who shows mutual respect and does not grandstand, even in situations where the odds may favour the latter. He reveals that he was raised Zulu, and as such has learned the traditions, customs and ways of life as a Zulu I think this is where his humility comes from.
