The highest evolution of the Golf harkens back to a time when seats had a checked fabric pattern and belt harnesses were bright red. I'm not a big fan of the Golf, and I wasn't impressed with the new Golf 8 GTI (as you can see by scanning the QR code on your right), but the new R is an entirely different animal, 20mm lower, with more aggressive styling while retaining its attractiveness. My test car's stunning bluer-than-blue paint job is called Lapiz Blue Metallic, but you can choose from another two colours for the R, Pure White, and Deep-black Pearl.
