We catch up with one of the greatest long distance runners in history as he makes a rare appearance on Indian shores

Sir Mo Farah is a name that needs little introduction. A four-time Olympic gold medallist and six-time world champion, he has dominated long-distance running for over a decade, setting records and redefining endurance racing. Since officially retiring from competition in 2023, the British legend has shifted gears—championing social causes, sharing insights on his podcast, and embracing life beyond the track. But his love for running remains as strong as ever.

It is that passion that brought him to Mumbai recently as the International Event Ambassador for the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025—one of Asia’s biggest road races. “The energy here is incredible,” he shared when we meet at the top-floor conference room at Nariman Point’s Trident Hotel. Swapping his running gear for a crisp kurta and trousers, the 41-year-old exuded a quiet warmth that contrasted with his fierce competitiveness. His soft-spoken nature, deep passion for fitness, and cheeky, uncle-like charm was enough to break the ice.

Beyond the leaderboard, the race was also a celebration of endurance, determination, and the sheer joy of running. “There’s something special about the way people come together for this race—whether they’re pros or just running for the love of it,” he added, as we moved on to a candid chat where he opened up about his life after competition, what keeps him moving, and why running will always be part of his journey. What is the secret ingredient for a successful city marathon?

I think it all comes down to hard work and determination. That’s what makes events like this a success. It’s incredible to see so many people running—men, women, and even those running for charity or in memory of loved ones. That’s what makes it special.
