Realizing the ethos of our Constitution is the highest celebration of our Independence Day

What does Independence Day signify for you?

Though August 15th is the Independence Day, it is a great day to celebrate, but this marks just the political Independence from British rule. We got our real Independence when we had our Constitution. Though we celebrate Republic Day separately on January 26 every year, we must even on August 15 remember that only political Independence does not make the citizens of India truly Independent. Adhering to our Fundamental Rights and Fundamental Duties make us truly Independent.

The Independence Day is a special day for each citizen of India to understand how and at what cost we got freedom for which many people martyred their lives, and what are the trials and tribulations that their families face today, after their dear ones departed leaving behind a permanent vacuum in their lives. Today, though India is going through trying times, it is true that only now, under leadership of our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ji, when the whole world recognizes him as a visionary, honest and selfless statesman, the Independence of India seems to get realized with its full efficacy. In his 9 years of reign as the PM of India, he has worked tirelessly on all big or small fronts and as such the progress in every sphere is moving at a remarkable pace, something I admire and feel proud about him.

What are your views about the political development in India after gaining Independence and about the current political scenario?

William Dalrymple goes further back

Indian readers have long known William Dalrymple as the chronicler nonpareil of India in the early years of the British raj. His latest book, The Golden Road, is a striking departure, since it takes him to a period from about the third century BC to the 12th-13th centuries CE.

The bleat from the street

What with all the apps delivering straight to one’s doorstep, the supermarkets, the food halls and even the occasional (super-expensive) pop-up thela (cart) offering the woke from field-to-fork option, the good old veggie-market/mandi has fallen off my regular beat.

Upgrade your jeans

If you don’t live in the top four-five northern states of India, winter means little else than a pair of jeans. I live in Mumbai, where only mad people wear jeans throughout the year. High temperatures and extreme levels of humidity ensure we go to work in mulmul salwars, cotton pants, or, if you are lucky like me, wear shorts every day.
