LAMBS LEAPING TO NEW HEIGHTS
September 17, 2023
|The Non-League Football Paper
TAMWORTH boss Andy Peaks insists survival is the only objective despite the Lambs’ flying start to life in National League North.
Promoted from Southern League Premier Central last season, Tamworth have won six of their opening nine games to sit top of the table.
They are also the division’s joint-top scorers after heavy victories over Spennymoor, Hereford and Peterborough Sports.
But Peaks, who took charge in February 2022 when Tamowrth were fourth-bottom of the table, says nobody at the Lamb Ground is suffering delusions of grandeur.
“I always thought we’d be OK because we’ve got a good group, but the start we’ve made is beyond our wildest dreams,” says Peaks, who spent eight years at AFC Rushden & Diamonds prior to taking charge at Tamworth.
“My remit from the chairman at the start of the season was to avoid relegation, and when we saw the opening fixtures it was purely about trying to get some points on the board.
“We’ve done a bit better than that, but it’s small steps right now. Until we hit the 40-odd points we’ll need to be safe then nobody will be looking at playoffs.”
