He identified a pattern of lies and cruel omissions in the updates given to Emma's parents, Margaret Caldwell and her husband William, who died of cancer in 2011.

They were led to believe four Turks were the only men in the frame and the only reason they were not in jail was the lack of a silver bullet piece of evidence to bind the police's sprawling case together.

But the Caldwells were not told of lain Packer and the six statements he gave to detectives over two-and-a-half years which emphatically connected the deviant to Emma and to the murder scene, 30 miles from Glasgow.
