CLASS: PETER-TRAINED RUNNER HAS THE ABILITY TO CLAIM TOP HONOURS IN VICTORY MOON

Trip no issue for Main Defender

Last week saw the running of the Grade 2 Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile and once again it was an absolutely superb day for charities.

The day itself was lovely, and as mentioned in my column last week, charities are winners no matter what, and it's a day I thoroughly love to be a part of.

The main race was won by previous Hollywoodbets Durban July winner Winchester Mansion who put together a master class by coming back to form and dominating a race I thought would be too short for him.

After his spectacular win in the July about 18 months ago, things haven't gone to plan, but the old saying that a horse can lose his form but not his ability was proven 100% correct and he threw his hat into the ring as one of the major contenders to the R6-million Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup on 30 November.

Unfortunately, the race was marred by the horrific incident that involved my ride Back In Business, where I clipped heels and came off after a very messy early part of the race.

After jumping out, I thought I got over in unbelievable time, but a couple of horses ahead of me caused interference around them resulting in a few incidents that caused my horse to clip heels and before I knew it, I had come off and worse than that, two horses ran straight over me.

This was unavoidable once I came off and it happened at the blink of an eye, once again showcasing the dangers of being a jockey. Unfortunately, I fractured my collar bone and I required surgery this week which went off really well.

I've been suffering from frequent bouts of nausea as well as headaches, common symptoms of concussion, and while I'll be off for a month or two, I honestly believe it was an absolute blessing to get off so lightly.

The incident once again shows me that I can never take anything for granted in life and I want to thank the medical team for their expert assistance on the day.
