Predictions of a stellar year for writing spot on

THIS year began with Plymouth poet Steve Spence highlighting what a vintage year for poetry and writing 2023 was and predicting a stellar 2024.

And 12 months on, Steve has been proved correct, with 2024 turning out to have been studded with landmark Plymouth events and publications.

It all began in January with the publication of Dr Phil Smith's epic "assemblage" of poetry The Commons (Diagrammatical Press) which featured more than 100 poems over 333 pages.

It was the first of three publications from Phil in 2024 and followed by Goblin Queens and Qualia Knights (Triarchy Press) in June.

January also saw the first of two monthly literature events which have become vitally important to the city's writing scene. Kenny Knight's CrossCountry Writers staged its first event at Plymouth Central Library, and would host further events at Leadworks, in Stonehouse, and at Thorn Park Lodge.

Hosted by Pete Golding, Creme de la Creme, has become a vital showcase for Plymouth writing talent, held monthly at Leadworks.

February saw the first gathering of the Provi Poets, at the city's smallest pub: the Providence in Greenbank.

The bi-monthly showcase has become one of the most popular events on the literary calendar and is set to continue in 2025, fronted, as usual, by poet Spencer Shute.
