Muslim groups up ante, plan nationwide stir

AMID speculation that the Centre is mulling tabling of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament this week, the Congress on Sunday said the proposed legislation is 'deeply flawed' and dubbed it an 'assault' on the Constitution.

Recently, the Union cabinet approved 14 amendments proposed by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) headed by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal and the Centre made it clear that it is keen on early passage of the Bill, as it will solve many issues of the Muslim community.

In a statement, Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said the Bill was part of the BJP's 'continuing attempts to damage' the centuries-old bonds of social harmony. It is also part of a bid to 'demonise minority communities' by spreading propaganda and creating prejudices, the opposition party alleged.
