SIR, This refers to the report, "Govt rolls out SOPS for public buses to ensure passenger safety" (6 December).
-
The standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the transport department are a step in the right direction, focusing on key areas such as prominently displaying route and fare charts, clearly displaying driver and conductor licenses, limiting waiting times to a maximum of one minute, and providing satisfactory fare explanations upon passenger enquiry.
However, as rightly pointed out by Rahul Chatterjee, Secretary of the All Bengal Bus Minibus Samannay Samiti, these guidelines must be supplemented with efforts to address more fundamental issues affecting passenger safety.
In practice, these rules are often ignored. It is common to find buses that fail to display valid documents, and long waits for passengers are a significant problem. These delays frequently lead to reckless driving, as drivers attempt to make up for lost time, or engage in dangerous competition with other buses on similar routes to pick up more passengers. This, in turn, significantly increases the risk of accidents.
