Panaji: ‘Bhakt Vidur’ was the first Indian film to face a ban in the 1920s as the character of Vidur bore a resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi’s personality.

Another silent film in 1930, ‘Udaykal’, based on Maratha king Shivaji, had to have its title changed because its previous one had the word ‘swarajya’, or freedom, which was seen as seditious by the British colonial power.
