At present, as against the annual fodder requirement of India, i.e 883.95 Mt of green fodder and 583.66 Mt of dry fodder, the estimated production is 664.73 Mt of green fodder and 355.93 Mt of dry fodder. Nonetheless, a huge amount of dry fodder is not harvested and left wasted/burnt in the field and non-field areas. Hence to minimize the existing gap, improved agronomic practices viz., agro-fortification, timely/adequate tillage operation, optimum nutrient management, timely sowing with adequate seed rate, intercropping system, water management, weed management and harvesting for higher biomass and/or twin yield of grain and forage should be practiced for strengthening the existing fodder resources for harnessing maximal benefits from the livestock production.
