After months of peaceful condition prevailing in Assam, there has been some excitement again in Assam, this time following the present Union government’s latest reported insistence to go through with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 even in spite of stiff opposition to it from almost the whole lot of people in the State. This reaction by them is reminiscent of the recent times when the political situation got charged with periodic agitational programmes by different political parties and several leading organisations such as the AASU, All Assam Krisak Sangram Samity, to note a few, to protest against the Centre’s hasty decision on several vital, concerning issues in the State, like selling out its oil fields through auctions etc., a contentious issue that had of late led to social unrest.

On 24th October 2016, National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) militants attacked the helipad of the Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s as the chopper landed in the Ukhrul district of Manipur. Chief Minster escaped unscathed after shots were fired at him while he was getting out of his helicopter. The chopper carrying Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and the others started from Imphal about 9:30 am. Minutes after the chopper landed at the Bakshi helipad in Ukhrul around 10.30 am firing began towards the Chief Minister. The firing continued for more ten minutes.

The 45-Hayuliang (ST) Assembly Constituency had fallen vacant after its long time legislator and former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Kalikho Pul allegedly committed suicide on 9 August, 2016. The third wife of Late Kalikho Pul was chosen by the family to stand for continuation of the late leader’s legacy. The North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) camp who are in power in the state thus made Dasanglu Pul their candidate. In Arunachal Pradesh the NEDA government comprises the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) and the BJP. Pul was given the BJP ticket, though in the NEDA dispensation PPA is the larger of the two parties constituting it.
