Just like people, pets can suffer from anxiety. Often expressed via inappropriate behaviours such as ruining furniture or acting aggressively, it usually stems from their fears. Animal behaviourist Laura Vissaritis says there's no cure-all and it's important not to stress too much about it. "Just learn how to respond to it," she advises.
When travelling
For animals, a long-distance trip can often be fraught with fear and angst - both on and off the road.
"Travel anxiety can present itself as carsickness, barking, hissing, whining, scratching or restlessness," says Laura. This can result in injury to your pet or property damage.
FIX IT Before travelling, take short trips around town with your pet and gradually build up to longer periods.
"On the road, ease tension by providing toys, yummy treats and calming music," Laura suggests.
A travel carrier or harness can help your pet feel more secure. If all else fails, talk to your vet about medication.
Anytime you go
Dogs are social creatures, which means they may struggle with being left to their own devices.
"Destructive behaviour, persistent barking, trying to escape and constant pacing are classic signs of a nervous pooch," explains Laura.
Cats can also display loud protests to prevent you from leaving, although it's rare.
FIX IT Downplay departures by engaging less with your pet just before you leave. Alternatively, use rewards to create positive reinforcement.
