It's never been more important to give a toss about recycling - if we don't reuse, we lose! Here's how to get the whole family to go green

Treasure YOUR TRASH

Global Recycling Day on Saturday, March 18 is a worldwide initiative that celebrates the Earth. Recycling helps protect the planet’s natural resources by reducing waste and transforming it into new resources. However, of the more than 17 million tonnes of waste each year generated by New Zealanders, we currently send most of it – around 13 million tonnes – to landfill. Recycling paper, plastic, glass and other items is an essential part of making your home greener. Implement these easy tips to quickly sort, store and transport your recyclable items. Going green has never looked better!

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Find out how to properly dispose of light bulbs, strong chemicals, aerosols and paints in your area. Consult your local waste management services website for details. Collect these special items in one container until you have enough to make a special trip. Electronics (or any kind of item that uses a plug or battery such as laptops, printer cartridges and phone systems) are classified as “eWaste” and also need to be responsibly recycled or disposed of.

THE ART OF DISGUISE

Conceal your recycling with a trendy storage vessel. Support the local charity shop or head to Trade Me and find an old wicker laundry basket large enough to conceal a recycling bin. You could even

GO CUSTOM

If your kitchen is undergoing a makeover, consider customising a cabinet with extra receptacles to make recycling easier. For example, look for pull-out base cabinets that hold several plastic garbage cans. Designate one bin for trash and the others for recyclables.
