Low female engagement in Sri Lanka's workforce persists. It is a critical concern, emblematic of entrenched norms and stereotypes. Women's labour force engagement hovers at a mere 31%, trailing significantly behind men's involvement, while their economic contribution stands at 29%. Many women find themselves within informal sectors, encompassing agriculture, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), alongside domestic labour.
In 2021, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank, spotlighted the glaring underrepresentation of women in Sri Lanka's labour force. Despite elevated educational attainment, only approximately one in three working-age women secure employment.
This trend finds egregious accentuation in senior managerial positions, board memberships, and business proprietorship. In comparison, Sri Lanka trails its South Asian peers, such as India and Bangladesh, in female representation on corporate boards. Under 10% of board directors in companies listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) are women. Achieving gender parity on these boards necessitates the inclusion of more than 500 female members.
Nevertheless, there are beacons of triumph: inspiring role models who drive innovations, spearhead change and lead companies to success, and many who have ascended to pinnacle positions in their respective domains. Many companies are also fervently endeavouring to forge more equitable opportunities for women, acknowledging that diversity nurtures equity, engenders invaluable viewpoints, and infuses indispensable qualities and unique perspectives pivotal for succeeding in a challenging world.
