Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)aren’t new fields of study. Technology companies have researched AR and VR for business applications for many years. But as computational power gets democratized, storage becomes cheaper to the extent of becoming almost free, and hardware advances make graphic processing and displays better, AR and VR technologies are net gainers.
AR and VR are sometimes used interchangeably, but there are fundamental differences between the two areas. AR refers to a digital layer being superimposed on real world objects or processes. VR refers to creating completely digital environment providing a synthetic experience of the real world.
The benefits derived from AR and VR however are similar. Capgemini conducted a detailed research on how companies globally and across industries were deploying these technologies. Our research, covering about 700 companies, produced remarkably consistent benefit cases for AR and VR.
Increase in productivity is the most talked about benefit. Applying AR / VR in field of view, using custom hardware to better understand and visualize complex devices and tools, and using digital twinning to study machines better has helped several companies dramatically improve productivity.
