Precision livestock farming is here

In October last year Evonik hosted their fourth customer seminar at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria.
The theme of the seminar was precision livestock farming, which has transformed from a concept for the future, into current practice. Local and international speakers discussed animal health issues and technology that can simplify managing the risks involved in livestock farming.
Diseases in poultry
Dr. Herman Bosman, a veterinarian from The Poultry Practice, gave an overview of common metabolic challenges he has encountered in broiler breeders. One such disease is sudden death syndrome. During an autopsy, Dr. Bosman observed red egg yolks inside the birds, as well as breasts that appeared cooked. He said this was caused by high body temperatures and that even after the birds had died, their bodies still radiated heat.
The observance of blue comb syndrome has also increased. Chickens’ combs have a blue appearance and are cold to the touch. This is due to circulatory problems caused by heart deformities in modern broilers. Heart deformities occur as a result of management issues such as high incubation temperatures.
