Located in Malabe, the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) is an institution of advance learning that commenced its programmes of activities in 2009 and which provides opportunities for tertiary level education in five faculties comprising of Management and Finance, Medicine, Engineering, and ICT and Media including the recently established Faculty of Allied Health and Behavioural Sciences.
SAITM currently has nearly 1,000 students reading for their Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Engineering, ICT and Management. SAITM is the only Non- State Higher Education Institute with multi faculties offering degrees ranging from Medicine to programmes in Computing.
Faculty of Medicine
SAITM is also the first and only Sri Lankan Non-State Higher Education Institute which is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Ministry of Higher Education of Sri Lanka to an award MBBS Degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). SAITM was granted degree awarding status for a MBBS degree as published in gazette notifications No. 1721/19 dated August 30, 2011 and by Government Gazette No. 1829/36 dated September 26, 2013 under Universities Act of 1978. SAITM is well equipped with required resources in all aspects to provide a world-class Medical Degree programme in Sri Lanka. Clinical training for the medical students is provided at the Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital (NFTH) which was established in 2013. The Units in the hospital include Professorial and Non professorial units in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, and all sub specialty units such as Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Radiology, Orthopedics, Rheumatology, Neurology, Dermatology etc that are necessary for clinical training. Kaduwela Ministry of Health (MoH) and Avissawella Base Hospital provide clinical training for Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine and Psychiatry respectively. The academic panel is one of the best comprising of 19 Professors, 74 Senior Lecturers and 54 Lecturers and is on par with or even above State Medical Faculties as per Sri Lanka University Statistics 2015 published by the UGC.
