There are many words to describe Reese Witherspoon, but ‘ambitious’ might be the best one of all. ‘[If acting didn’t work out,] I would have gone from Stanford to medical school and become a surgeon,’ she says. ‘Right now, I’d probably be the premier surgeon and paediatric cardiologist at Vanderbilt University… I’m ambitious, and I’m over hiding that.’ With 23 producing projects in the works, lifestyle brand Draper James and an independent film and TV studio focusing on female-led stories to run, there really is no questioning her drive. ‘I like proving people wrong,’ Reese, 42, admits.

Everyone is obsessed with Big Little Lies right now! Why did you and Nicole Kidman decide to do it as a limited series?

Women weren’t going to movies. They were streaming shows. They were on Instagram and Facebook. Digital was winning. The only way was to go where women are, instead of expecting them to come to us in theatres.
