The Actor Opens Up About His Struggle With Fame and How He Found His ‘voice’

The Twilight saga may have propelled him to stardom at the age of 22 – and netted him a hefty pay packet in the process – but Robert Pattinson is just glad he didn’t have to suck up to anyone during his time on the five-part film series. ‘I didn’t have to kiss anybody’s [arse] the entire time,’ he happily shares. ‘I don’t think I did, anyway.’

And while the now-31-year-old has spent close to a decade in the spotlight, he says the fanfare surrounding his personal life still confuses him. ‘I don’t understand why,’ he says of the interest. ‘But whenever I see a bunch of paparazzi hanging out, I always think, “Oh God, what have they found out? Oh, that love child! I totally forgot!”’

Here, he talks life, love and his next move.

The hype surrounding Twilight was incredible. Has the furore died down after all this time?

I didn’t go into a supermarket for about six years! But now I can go in and chat to the guy who’s working there about his kids, or where he’s going on holiday, and not be thinking, ‘Is he gonna sell me out?’ I just don’t have to think about that stuff anymore.

Was there a specific point in time when you realised you’d made it?

I remember when it happened. I was going to clubs in LA and you had to call the promoters ahead of time to get on the guest list. But one time I forgot to call, and I was on the list anyway. That’s when I knew. I showed up with mustard down my T-shirt and they’re like giving me the wink, ‘Yeah, man, you’re on the list.’
