Matt Braunsdorf & Jared Dymbort Talk JOHN THE CARPENTER.
SCREAM’s Jessy Williams caught up with the writer-director, Matt Braunsdorf, and the actor-composer, Jared Dymbort, of the short film John the Carpenter. The film, unsurprisingly, pays homage to horror legend John Carpenter and genre films of the 1980’s as the story follows a pair of sibling carpenters as they are attacked by a creature in the snowy woods of Connecticut. John (the Carpenter) is forced to seek revenge after his sister is murdered by the beast and what ensues is an action-packed, bloody battle of strength and stamina.
In the interview, Matt and Jared discuss a missed opportunity with Adrienne Barbeau, their favourite moments from the film and the challenges they faced creating their epic 20-minute monster movie.
SCREAM: Why did you choose the brother-sister relationship as the focus?
MATT: The reason why I liked the idea of this film in the first place was because my father was a carpenter. He passed away a few years back and I’ve always wanted to pay tribute to him. Making this a brother-sister story and about a pair of carpenters, was me trying to honour my father’s memory. It was also just to subvert expectations. In revenge tales it’s always a husband or wife and I feel like I don’t get to see the other family side of it. Yes, there is always Liam Neeson trying to get his daughter back after she’s been taken, but for me, the bond of family is always stronger and something I could latch on to from an emotional perspective.
SCREAM: Did the title of the film come before the story or was it a result of the script being written?
