JOHN R. LEONETTI GRANTS OUR WISH WITH AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK INTO HIS LATEST TEEN-THRILLER WISH UPON
Hitting theatres this summer, WISH UPON, starring Joey King (THE CONJURING, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE), Sherilyn Fenn (TWIN PEAKS, BOXING HELENA), Ryan Phillippe (I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, CRUEL INTENTIONS), and Shannon Purser (STRANGER THINGS), plans on serving audiences a dose of psychological terror and thought provoking fear, wrapped up in a small, terrifying little package; a cursed music box to be exact. And what better filmmaker to helm the production, other than genre filmmaker and self-proclaimed glass half-full kind of guy, John R. Leonetti.
No stranger to filmmaking and the wonderful world of horror, Leonetti has been at it since the early 90’s, working as a cinematographer on such films as CHILD’S PLAY 3, THE CONJURING, and INSIDIOUS/ INSIDIOUS 2. More so, he’s directed the films MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2, WOLVES AT THE DOOR, and the 2014, blockbuster hit, ANNABELLE. Now, Leonetti is back for more and ready to make all of your horror wishes come true, in WISH UPON.
WISH UPON, a teen-thriller at its core, centres around Claire, a high school senior who finds an ancient Chinese music box capable of fulfilling her deepest of wishes. Quickly, Claire realises that wishes can come true; however, they are cursed with the most horrific of costs. Well, needless to say, this is no Disney fairytale. There is no genie unbound from a lamp ready to fulfil its master’s wishes. This is the story of the horrific and psychological ramifications of actually receiving what we wish for. And this is what John R. Leonetti has to say about it.
SCREAM: The last film you released in the theatre was ANNABELLE, which was basically about a possessed doll. WISH UPON carries a similar element, a possessed, inanimate object. Is this a theme that you find yourself connected to, or is it more like, wow, this just kind of happened?
