Secret #1: Stay in School
Bruno Mars has been a longtime student of musical greats, and what they did to delight their audiences.
Lesson for audience builders: Never stop being a raving fan and a student. Study those who have succeeded at what you do, or what you need to do well to best serve your customers. This may mean reading books, going to conferences, taking courses, or paying close attention to the actions of those at the top of their game. Your quest in studying how to become better will pay handsome dividends.
Action plan:
Make a list of three to five of the most successful people in your field. Then identify what they consistently do that makes their audiences respond so favorably. Spot the trends, and then choose one specific action to apply in your business.
Secret #2: Work Your Blue Suede Shoes
Bruno may sing about being lazy, but he’s certainly no slacker. He began his 10,000 hours in performing when he was four.
Lesson for audience builders: You have to put in the work. You have to practice your craft. There’s no way around this. You must spend time working on getting insanely good at what you do. And if you didn’t start at four years old, don’t worry. It’s never too late to get started. The best way to improve your skills quickly is to work on your craft every day. So if you’re a writer, write every day. If you’re a teacher, teach every day. It’ll make a massive difference.
Action plan:
Identify a specific thing you will do each day to get better at your craft. If you’re a writer, you could write at least a thousand words a day. Then make a deal with yourself to do that task each day, no matter what, for at least one month. Once you reach thirty consecutive days, reward yourself. Then do another 30 days.
Secret #3: Have a Love Affair With Your Work
Bruno Mars is living his dream, doing work that he loves and always wanted to do.

Advance the show! What does advancing the show mean? It means calling or emailing your point person for the evening about a week prior to the show and confirming every detail for the night: load in time and location, sound check time, parking, door time, show time, openers, compensation, drink/food deal, guest list spots, lodging situation, your day-of contact person’s cell phone number, who the front of house sound engineer is for the evening, who you should settle up with at the end of the night to get paid, and any other information they need to know about your night (VIP backstage hangs, extra lights you’re bringing in, seated or standing show).

There’s much more to do tan just promote. From my experience leading groups and workinhg with group leaders who were incredibly organized (or not), here’s a basic checklist of the crucial communication and organization elements I’ve picked up.
