Author and life coach dr Nicola Bunting says that two personality types are particularly prone to procrastination: ideALiStS – people who want to do everything perfectly, or not at all. eNtHUSiAStS – individuals who tend to take on too many things at once and then get overwhelmed. dr Bunting explains that recognising your problem is the first step to change by either lowering your standards a little or learning to say no.

Break it down

If the task seems so gargantuan that you don’t know where to start, tackle it in steps. Does your garage need a major clear-out? Bring out one box at a time to sort through, allocating a strict 20 minutes to the task. If it’s that you don’t know how to do something that’s holding you back, then work out steps to find answers. Try Internet research, ask friends, get quotes or seek professional advice. The avoidance factor is the first obstacle you have to overcome – and you’ve done it. And now that you know what you want to do and also how you can accomplish it, create a practical plan of action. Write out a to-do list and schedule blocks of time in order to get them done.
