ARATI KUMAR-RAO
Arati Kumar-Rao is renowned for her work on the 2014 oil spill in the Sundarbans and its effects on the endangered species and inhabitants of the area. “I returned to the forest to document the disaster where local fishermen and children were cleaning up the oil with kitchen utensils and bare hands. It wasn’t a pretty sight and screamed of governmental apathy towards the ecosystem,” says the award winning photojournalist. Through Peepli, a multimedia journalism platform she co-founded with photographer Kalyan Varma and journalists Prem Panicker and Rahul Bhatia, Kumar-Rao continues to document the slow violence of ecological degradation and climate change on ecosystems and livelihoods along South Asia’s rivers.
