FIVE OF THE BEST IRISH WHISKEYS
Decanter
|April 2022
Popular with drinkers around the world, Irish whiskey has experienced mixed fortunes in the past and the category nearly died out altogether a few decades ago.
A renaissance was driven by big brands such as Jameson, but new distilleries have been appearing all over the country and single pot still – Ireland’s unique whiskey style, involving the use of unmalted barley – is blossoming again.
1 Drumshanbo Single Pot Still £48.49-£55.98/70cl
Amazon UK, Master of Malt, Old & Rare Whisky, Prestige Drinks, Royal Mile Whiskies, The Secret Bottle Shop
This distinctive bottling is from The Shed Distillery in County Leitrim. Opened in 2014, it was the first new distillery in the province of Connacht in more than 100 years. Matured in Kentucky bourbon and oloroso Sherry casks, it’s made with a mixture of malted and unmalted barley, plus Irish Barra oats, which add a lovely creaminess to the texture. You’ll also find plenty of spice – green chillies, black pepper – alongside caramel, baked apples and a savoury tang. Alcohol 43%

2 Jameson Black Barrel
