The grinding is manual, and totally under the control of the operator.
In use, the drill is laid in the vee and one lip brought into gentle contact with the wheel and rotated. When that face is satisfactory, the second face is given the same treatment.
It is important that both lips of the drill are the same length, if it is to cut to size. Unequal lengths will bring the point off centre, resulting in an oversize hole.
Drill grinding gauges are available, or a steel rule can be used, to check that the lips are of equal length
