Is there anything as cheerful as a daisy?
-
When children first learn to draw flowers, it is always a daisy that they instinctively draw. Daisies depict simplicity and innocence, epitomising their unpretentious, modest beauty.
Daisies are reminiscent of the sun with their golden centres and rays of sunlight, which is where they get their name from, ‘day’s eye’ or daisy. Daisies belong to the Asteraceae family and there are thousands of different varieties. The name Asteraceae comes from the type genus Aster, which in Greek means star and refers to the star-like form of the inflorescence.
There are some people who dismiss daisies in their gardens due to the fact that they are so commonplace but I think their undemanding nature and reliant flowering in most garden situations make them a must-have plant for any planting scheme, particularly low maintenance gardens.
