The gentrification of the urban SUV reaches its peak with the Volvo XC60
There’s always been something noble about Volvo. It’s always been the soccer mom of the car world – practical, sensible and firm in its resolve to meet everyday transportational needs. No more, no less. It’s this sort of focus that’s gotten its latest, the XC60, to win the 2018 “World Car of the Year” award. But the profile of the prototypical Volvo appears to have evolved from trusty farmyard station wagon to the preferred form of personal mobility: the urban SUV. In a lot of ways, the XC60 is a scaled-down version of the highly successful XC90. It’s even built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (aka SPA) platform, and continues to champion the cause of Swedish aesthetics with a clean, crease-free design and Zen garden interiors.
