The new top-end iPhone doesn’t look drastically different from last year’s, cameras aside. And that’s because it isn’t drastically different from last year’s, cameras aside. Yet lots of small changes all over mean that this is a phenomenal phone… which it had better be, given that it starts at a whopping £1,049 for the 5.8-inch model or £1,140 for the 6.5-inch ‘Max’ model.
The stainless steel on the sides and glass across the back are essentially identical to the iPhone XS. The glass has been upgraded – Apple says it’s the toughest ever on a smartphone – and the phone comes in a new colour called Midnight Green.
The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max have the same screen density (over 400ppi) but at different resolutions, so there’s no difference in sharpness. For movie buffs, there’s a strong argument to get the bigger model just to really, really enjoy the display, because it’s exceptional. Peaking at 1,200 lumens when viewing HDR photos or video, it’s like having an OLED TV in your hand. The wide P3 colour gamut makes photos look vibrant and realistic, and everything is pin-sharp. It’s utterly gorgeous.
HDR videos, especially Dolby Vision, look incredible and the lack of HDR10+ support isn’t a huge problem as hardly anybody uses it: Netflix and iTunes prefer Dolby. HDR10+ videos will fall back to regular HDR10.
