Captain Asa Hall cited unflappable general Gary Johnson’s battleplan as the inspiration behind Torquay United’s morale-boosting return to winning ways.

Many of Johnson’s battalion have joined the walking wounded in recent weeks with progress on the National League battleground suffering as a result.

Victory at Weymouth had seen the Gulls lead the way by 11 points at the turn of the year but that was slashed by virtue of one win in seven league outings in 2021 prior to Tuesday’s trip to Solihull’s fortress.

But having emerged from 13 minutes of added time with a 2-1 victory, much of which was played out after keeper Shaun MacDonald had been sent off, Hall reckons the unshakable faith Johnson has in his troops can keep Torquay on track to win the war.

“He stays the same and just reinforces the message,” said Hall.
