Shoppers were urged to stay calm last night as store chiefs promised that shelves would be stacked at Christmas.
Staff are “pulling out all the stops” to prevent shortages wrecking the holiday season.
A merry Christmas still on the cards as retailers say shops will be stocked
Industry expert Andrew Goodacre said: “Retailers are working hard with the supply chains to ensure that the shelves are stocked and shoppers can buy all the products they need for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
Shop bosses called for calm and insisted they will overcome staff and lorry driver shortages, supply chain problems – as well as soaring energy costs.
Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, said: “The HGV driver shortage has already created disruption for consumers, with some gaps on shelves.
“However, retailers are doing everything they can to protect their customers. While the situation is likely to become more challenging in the run-up to Christmas, retailers will be pulling out all the stops to ensure everyone’s Christmas favourites are available.
“We urge consumers to be respectful to their fellow shoppers and to buy as they would do normally.”
